ABSTRACT
This paper from recent review of literature delves into the significanceof reinforced concrete in infrastructure development, lauding itsstrength, durability, and versatility. The attention then shifts to thecorrosion challenges confronting reinforced concrete structures inNigeria's coastal regions. Factors such as chloride ions, harshenvironments, and diverse corrosion mechanisms are scrutinized, withexploration of mitigation strategies including inhibitors, coatings, andcathodic protection. Non-destructive testing methods are emphasized for corrosion detection. The discussion underscores the critical imperative for effective monitoring and mitigation inNigeria, emphasizing environmental and climatic factors influencing corrosion in reinforcedconcrete structures. The paper also investigates the multifaceted impact of material-relatedfactors on concrete corrosion, stressing the importance of concrete quality, steel composition, and environmental conditions. Economic repercussions are explored, emphasizing thesubstantial costs of corrosion-induced maintenance. Various prevention and mitigationstrategies, such as corrosion-resistant materials and innovative concrete designs, areexamined. Overall, the study emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive approaches toensure the longevity and resilience of reinforced concrete infrastructure, particularly incoastal regions.
