ABSTRACT
The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of the finesconsistency ( ) fn C on the fines flocculation characteristics using a cofactor(CF) - polyethylene oxide (PEO) retention aid. One result of this work hasshown that the floc size (A) and the flocculation rate ( ) f r started toincrease with the increase in the fn C , reached maximum, plateaued andthen started to decrease. Deflocculation with the rate ( ) d r was alsorecorded in the all runs. The flocculation rate constant ( ) f k , thedeflocculation rate constant ( ) d k , and the reverse equilibrium constant( ) equi K were all determined and plotted versus the fn C . The flocculation rates as functions of thefn C values were verified with Longmuir equation and Smoluschowski isotherm, and theattachment rate constants ( ) att k were found. The increase in f r with the increase in fn C wasascribed to the increase in the collision frequency () that caused increases in both theattachment forces and the countered viscous forces. When the rate f r reached maximum, theattachment forces balanced the viscous forces, but with more increase in fn C the viscous forcesincreased over the attachment forces, thus resulting negative slopes (negative att k ) and a decreasein flocculation rate f r .
